Ultrasound of cranial sutures

Ultrasound of cranial sutures

The cranial sutures may rarely be prematurely closed. This craniosynostosis may happen separately or more rarely in association with some rare syndromes and if left untreated may lead to severe distortion or rarely to severe neurologic problems. The usual diagnostic work up includes 2-3 cranial x-rays and 3D Computed Tomography in positive for complete or partial craniosynostosis or inconclusive cases. Ultrasound recently has been proven a safe and reliable alternative radiation free imaging method for the cranial sutures, both normal and abnormal. So, Ultrasound can be safely and reliably used instead of plain x-rays with the great advantage of complete lack of radiation that is very important for this sensitive age.
